The Waiting Room: Trusting God When Life Feels Stuck

You know that feeling where nothing's really wrong, but nothing feels right either?

Like, my grades are fine. My family's okay. I'm not going through some major crisis. But there's this heavy weight sitting on my chest, and I can't figure out why it's there or what I'm supposed to do about it.

I'm just... waiting. For what? I don't even know.

Maybe I'm waiting to figure out what I want to do after high school. Or waiting to see if things work out with that friend group. Or waiting for God to show me what's next. But in the meantime, I'm stuck in this weird in-between space where I feel like I should be doing something, but I have no idea what that something is.

If you've ever felt that, you're not alone.

The Hardest Kind of Waiting

Here's what makes waiting seasons so difficult: at least when something's actively wrong, you know what to fix. Failed a test? Study harder. Fight with a friend? Apologize and work it out. But when you're just... stuck? When life feels heavy, but you can't point to a specific problem? That's when it gets confusing.

I think the worst part is feeling like everyone else has direction, while you don't. Like everyone knows where they're going, what they're doing, who they want to be. And I'm just here, existing, waiting for something to happen.

As a Christian, it feels even weirder. Aren't I supposed to trust God's timing? Aren't I supposed to have peace? But sometimes trusting God's timing doesn't make the waiting feel any lighter.

What the Bible Says About Waiting (And Why It's Hard)

The Bible talks a lot about waiting. Like, a LOT. Abraham waited 25 years for a son. Joseph waited years in prison before God's plan made sense. David was anointed as king but spent years running for his life before he actually became king.

Waiting isn't new. And it's not a sign that you're doing something wrong.

But here's what I've realized: waiting doesn't mean doing nothing.

When David was waiting to become king, he wasn't just sitting around hoping things would work out. He was learning to lead, growing in faith, becoming the person God needed him to be. The waiting wasn't wasted time—it was preparation.

Maybe that's what this in-between season is for me too. Not wasted time, but prep time.

Trusting God in the Waiting

So what do you actually DO when you're in a waiting season? When you feel stuck but don't know what you're waiting for?

Keep showing up. Go to school. Do your work. Show up for your friends and family. Even when it feels pointless, consistency matters. You're building character even when you can't see the results.

Stay connected to God. This is the hardest one for me. When I don't know what to pray for, prayer feels awkward. But even just saying "God, I don't know what's next, but I trust You" is enough. He doesn't need perfectly worded prayers—He just wants you to talk to Him.

Don't compare your timeline to anyone else's. Just because your friend knows exactly what college they want or what career they're chasing doesn't mean you're behind. Your timeline is your own. God’s plan for you is intentional, personal, and unlike anyone else’s.

Look for small ways to grow. If you don't know the big next step, focus on the small ones. Read your Bible more. Treat people better. Work on that one habit you've been putting off. Waiting seasons are perfect for getting better at the basics.

Trust that God's still working. Just because you can't see what He's doing doesn't mean nothing's happening. Some of the most important growth happens in the quiet, invisible moments.

The Weight Will Lift

I don't know when your waiting season will end. I don't even know when mine will. But I do know this: God doesn't waste seasons.

That heavy feeling you're carrying? It won't last forever. The confusion about what's next? It'll get clearer. And the growth that's happening right now, even though you can't see it? It's real.

Waiting is hard. Waiting without knowing what you're waiting for is even harder. But you're not stuck—you're being prepared. And when the next season comes, you'll be ready for it.

In the meantime, keep trusting. Keep showing up. Keep talking to God, even when you don't have the words.

You're not behind. You're not forgotten. You're right where you need to be.
